C&O Maintenance-of-Way Work Train Camp Cars, 1948-1952 -- Photo Album

This is a set of 34 photos which were used as part of a study begun by C&O in 1948 to rework its maintenance-of-way work train equipment fleet. They photographed some of the cars then in service, as well as some after refurbishment.

The cars included retired box cars that were converted to tool cars, generator cars, sleeping cars, kitchen cars, dining cars, and some ex-passenger cars (mostly wooden) that were converted mainly to kitchen/dining cars and sleeping cars.

The process apparently lasted several years.  During this time the first of the ex-Pullman troop sleeping cars that C&O bought surplus were being converted to camp car use, so some were photographed.

Since this was a general rehabilitation of the fleet, photographs show both inside and outside of the cars.

These photos originally accompanied a booklet/study that described them and depicted floor plans for cars that were to be incorporated into the fleet. This book is available separately as DS-7-036, Camp Car Diagrams, 1948.
