Cliff Top Double House Kit, HO Scale

This double house, or duplex, is based on double houses used in Cliff Top, WV and Sewell, WV.  Cliff Top was a coaling town which shipped coal to Sewell along the New River by means of the Mann’s Creek Railway, a narrow gauge steam railroad.  The town of Sewell was created to serve two purposes, to make coke and serve as a transfer point for coal and lumber coming down the Mann’s Creek Railway from Cliff Top and Landisburg.  These houses were originally built in Ledonia and Birdeye.  These two towns were also along the C&O.  As these two mining towns were shut down, the houses were taken down board-by-board and moved to Cliff Top and Sewell with additions made to the original house.  Minors from Ledonia and Birdeye moved to Sewell and Cliff Top to operate the coal mine there and reoccupy these homes.  There were a total of about 30 of these double houses.  The prototype was built using all board and batten walls, but to show what the additions were, and to add a little variety, we have made this kit with clapboard siding and used board and batten for the additions. This kit is provided with long stilts and stair stringers so that it can be build on a hillside if desired.  Just trim them to fit the terrain.  The kit is all laser cut with the exception of Tichy chimneys.  This double house measures 6”w X 5”d.  This kit makes a wonderful duplex for any mining, timber, or even mill community.
