“The Engineer” Reprint - Art Poster from The Chessie, by Jerry Farnsworth

This is one of several original art works commissioned by C&O Chairman Robert R. Young for display on The Chessie, C&O’s built-but-never-operated ultra-luxury coach train of 1948. Special cases were installed in each car to display art by contemporary American Artists. “The Engineer” is by Jerry Farnsworth (1895-1985), who won six awards from the National Academy of Design and one from the National Arts Club as well as one from the Los Angeles Museum of Art, and others in the 1940s. Young was well-connected in the art world through Georgia O’Keefe and commissioned the original art pieces from several contemporary American artists.

Farnsworth visited Clifton Forge and painted this work incorporating features from several different C&O engineers he met at that time. The image was used on the 1951 C&O Annual Report cover. It, and the other pieces, were reproduced as 25x31-inch art posters by C&O and sold to the public in 1949-1950. C&OHS has a collection of these prints which are quite rare today.  We are offering, for the first time, and for a limited time, full color prints of “The Engineer”
