Chessie’s 90th Anniversary – The Kitten that Became a Railroad - Since 1933

By Thomas W. Dixon, Jr.

This little 8-page booklet is intended to commemorate the 90th “birthday” of Chessie, the Railroad Kitten.

It outlines in summary how she was created and then tells of her long career advertising C&O’s passenger trains with the “Sleep Like a Kitten and Wake up Fresh as a Daisy on C&O’s Fleet of Air-Conditioned Trains.”

She became the darling of the people who rode the trains. They looked forward to her annual calendar showing her in some interesting C&O location or on the train. C&O used her in all its national advertising. Her success as an advertising symbol is unequaled by any other railroad, and she is also recognized as one of the most important advertising symbols for any industry/business.

This little pamphlet is just to review her “life” and illustrates several of her appearances over the years.
