C&O maintained a set of charts showing all side tracks and yard
tracks on the system, station-by-station, which consisted of a small
schematic diagram and a table with the track number, length in feet, if
C&O or private ownership, the type of track it was by use, and
remarks. The record seems to have originated in 1937 and apparently was
updated periodically as needed. We do not know how these charts were
used, but there is no evidence that these sheets were ever published and
made available outside the Chief Engineer's Office, and seem to have
been an in-office reference tool only.
The sheets were arranged by
state. We have rearranged them by subdivision and publish them in that
format as more appropriate for reference use today by historians,
hobbyists, and modelers.
