C&O acquired 1,500 AAR standard 40-foot, 50ton boxcars in 1937. Of those, just 100 had what is termed "Diamond-and-Dot" embossed pattern on their ends. This is also known as "Deco" pattern and was only used on these 100 cars. They were in service well into the 1970s, and have become an iconic design because of the unusual appearance of the ends. These cars would be ideal for trains operation from 1937-1970. For reference, see C&O Diagram Sheet No. 17 DS-00-196 and C&O Freight Cars 1937-1946, page 109 and following BK-14-810
