A Betrayed Widow, a Soviet Spy, and a Presidency in the Balance
This is simply a wonderful book. I have just finished reading it over two days. I simply could not put it down. As a historian myself I enjoyed the wonderful weave of history that was the fabric of this book. It has all the unknown and super-intimate, secret details of the trip and all the personal politics that it entailed. The characters are ones who were, at the time, shaping the history of the world. Even more enthralling than the trip from Warm Springs to Washington was the final leg from Washington to the grave in Hyde Park and return, when Truman and his men were aboard as well. The entourage even included a Soviet KGB agent who happened to be a White House staffer.  - All the railroad/train details are right. The descriptions of the cars and locomotives are superb. There's a roster at the end that tells how each one ended, scrapped or saved. The author's only slipup was saying "decoupled" instead of "uncoupled."  In all, I could hardly recommend it more. This is a book of history, and an exciting one at that.  - Tom Dixon --
