Heavyweight, Lightweight and Passenger Locomotive Painting & Lettering Anthology
This anthology is an expansion of the seminal works of William Stone and the late Tod Hanger from years gone by. The chapters examine details about the lettering for Pullman cars assigned to the C&O, the cars of the George Washington.
Other parts review lettering for head-end cars, coaches and diners drawing heavily from information found in C&O diagrams. In the 1940s both Budd and Pullman-Standard proposed and delivered new, lightweight cars. Painting and lettering schemes for these cars diverged from the typical the C&O used in earlier time frames. Some of the proposed schemes, for which there are artist renderings, did not reach the light of day. In 1930, Chesapeake and Ohio adopted the lettering scheme, full road name on the tender and numbers on the cab and tender rear, for steam locomotives that, with some modification, would persist through the end of steam.
