This is the complete story of the Chesapeake and Ohio’s Super Power 4-8-4 locomotives, the Class J-3 and J-3a Greenbriers. Used primarily between Hinton, W.Va. and Charlottesville, Va., these 12 locomotives were the mainstay of C&O passenger service in the mountains from 1935 on. Beginning with the Greenbriers antecedents, 4-6-4 and 4-8-2 passenger locomotives, the book covers the development, testing, and service of the first group of J-3s. Nos. 600-604, the wartime second order of Nos. 605-606, and the post-war delivery of J-3as Nos. 610-614. Through to their retirement in the early 1950s and the rebirth of J-3a No. 614 in the 1980s to the present day, when No. 614 is once again being restored for service. This is the fourth book of the thirteenth year and the fifty-second overall.
