BOOK REVIEW

“Seldom can it be said that a book is comprehensive in its coverage of a railroad subject. Often, additional material is available and can be published. — But — This particular book comprises 640 pages of absolutely superb illustrative, and informational material about the Shay geared locomotive. It is written by four authors: Richard A. Henderson, John C. Benson, George R. Kadelak, Steve Hauff, and published by White River Productions. The sheer mass of the book with a weight of six pounds is at first daunting, however, the excellent design and layout, coupled with the outstanding illustrative material makes the book comprehensible and in fact, interesting to browse.

As a reference book, it is nonpareil, giving detailed data on every Shay locomotive, its background, design, use, and essentially all other elements pertinent to the engines.

This reviewer hardly has words to express the value of this publication to anyone interested in logging and logging locomotives, of which Shay was, of course, the principle one. It is already in its third printing, first published in 2022, which in itself serves to recommend the value of the book. I don’t understand how we managed to miss the first publication of this volume. I give it the highest possible recommendation.

Although an expensive book for the size, quality, and information supplied, it is actually reasonable in today’s market. -T. W. Dixon”
