DS-00-192 C&O Freight Car Diagram Book 1922
Most railroads produced mechanical diagram books that gave the major dimensions,
mechanical appliances, and other data on locomotives and cars. These books of
drawings were supplied to officials and mechanical people at major stations and
terminals so that they could easily determine the requirements for repair and
maintenance of cars in their area. The C&O began producing the diagrams
sometime after 1900 for locomotives, but the earliest freight car book we have found
is this one which seems to date from about 1922, and doesn’t seem to be entirely
complete. It does represent the earliest available mechanical diagram data on C&O
freight equipment.
