C&O Wooden Water Tank Standard Drawings
This set of drawings, originally devloped as standard practice by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway’s Chief Engineer’s Office, gives the dimensions, materials, used, layout, and method of construction for 50,000 and 100,000 gallon capacity wooden water tanks. The drawings were originally made in 1922 and one is updated to 1927. They represent the latest and most modern designs for wooden water tanks. Most new water stations had steel tanks by this time.
However, many wooden tanks remained in service tathe end of steam and some survived as late as the mid 1980s.
These drawings were undoubtedly used for repair and maintenance of these facilities. The original linen drawings are very well worn indicating frequent printing for field use.
The drawings should give modelers information for reproducing these very common tanks using parts of commercial
kits or by scratch building.
