Roadrailer System Operating Instructions for Railvan
This small booklet was issued to instruct employees on how to prepare, couple, and uncouple the C&O’s early Roadrailer vans to passenger trains. The Roadrailer or Railvan (C&O used both names) was a highway trailer that also had railroad guide wheels which could be lowered as the trailers were attached to a transition truck which was coupled to the rear of passenger trans. The Roadrailers saw service on the C&O passenger trans in Michigan in the early-to-mid-1960s. The were dropped as the railway lost mail contracts since they were used almost exclusively for mail transportation. The idea was revved many years later.
