Van Sweringen Railroads Junction Point Maps 1925
The Van Sweringen brothers financial and real estate men of Cleveland assembled a large railroad empire in the period 1916-early 1930s by buying lines through holding companies. Their railroads, taken as a whole, became a major influence in American railroading, and most especially in eastern railroad operations. During the 1920s several of their lines were proposed to be operated as a unified system. These maps were prepared as part of that proposal, to show how the railroads involved were geographically juxtaposed.
Although a number of the lines came to be operated by joint management, and three of those shown in these maps were ultimately merged (C&O, HV, PM), the entire unified system was never achieved.
