Van Sweringen Railroads – Standards
This booklet consists of reprints of standard drawings prepared for the four Van Sweringen Railroads (NKP, C&O, Erie and PM) that were directly controlled by a joint committee dealing with certain engineering standards. This was called the Advisory Committee on Way and Structures. It was similar to the Advisory Mechanical Committee, which dealt with locomotive and rolling stock standards and design.
O. P. ad M. J. Van Sweringen were Cleveland, Ohio, real estate developers at the turn of the 20th Century who acquired control of the Nickel Plate Road in 1916, and from that point through the 1920s assembled a huge railroad empire which they controlled through a maze of holding companies. Pioneers in this type of financing, they put together a group of railroads that they controlled financially which included those listed above (Nickel Plate Road, Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, Pere Marquette Railway, and Erie Railroad), as well as the Missouri Pacific, Wheeling & Lake Erie, Chicago & Eastern Illinois, and others.
However, the four roads mentioned in paragraph one are those that were more or less jointly operated under interlocking directrates and operating officers. The advisory committees mentioned were put together to help the constituent railroads by developing standard practices that could be used on all lines, and to plan, develop, and supervise construction of locomotives and cars that utilized the best modern mechanical standards.
The standard drawings reproduced in this booklet represent all those that the C&O Historical Society archives holds which are of a joint nature. They are all in the series “R”, and are drawn for inclusion in books issued to all levels of personnel dealing with construction and maintenance-of-way work for all four roads. Although he Vans lost control of their empire in the early 1930s, the joint committees continued to operate well into the 1940s, and were only abandoned when the C&O merged the Pere Marquette and divested its interests in the NKP. Erie had been released earlier. However these standards appear to have been used until the 1970s on C&O.
Some of the original drawings reproduced here were extra long and folded out. In this reproduction they have been reprinted in sections, one sheet after the other. To reconstruct a full sheet for these it will be necessary to disbind this book and tape the drawings together. They should overlap and no part should be missing.
