H-6 2-6-6-2 Compound Articulated Steam Locomotives 1300-1309 Photos
Photos in this booklet include both Baldwin builder photos and in-service pictures of C&O’s H-6 2-6-6-2 type locomotive built in 1949. No. 1309, the last of the series of 10 was, in fact, the last commercially built steam locomotive for use by a railroad in the U. S. These locomotives were essentially duplicates of the fiurs H-6s, built in the early 1920s. The new 1300-09 were simply to replace/supplement these older engines that were perceived as being at the end of their serviceable lives. This type was primarily used for mine shifter runs in the coal fields. But, diesels soon arrived, and these locomotive had a very short life, being gone by 1956.
