H-6 2-6-6-2 Articulated Steam Locomotives 1325-1474 Photos
The H-4 was the largest class on the C&O in the steam era, with 150 locomotives in it, built 1912-1918. Photos in this booklet include a few builder photos, showing early H-4 class C&O 2-6-6-2s, followed by a number of photos showing these locomotives, as modified over several rebuildings, in service in the 1940s-1950s. They arrived as primary mainline coal train locomotives, but by the 1930s were largely gone from this service, and spent most of their remaining long lives in mine run service out of coal marshalling yards in the coal fields of W. Va. and Ky., however they were also used as hump pushers, for local freights, and even in regular freight service on various lines
as needed until they were retired in the early 1950s.
