DS-09-325 K-2 Class 2-8-2 Mikado Type Steam Locomotives 1160-1209 Photos

K-2 Class 2-8-2 Mikado Type Steam Locomotives 1160-1209 Photos

C&O got its first 2-8-2s in 1911, and was ready for more following World War II. Instead of opting for the U8RA standard which had been introduced during the war, in 1924, C&O had Alco’s Richmond Works build 50 K-2 class Mikados that were very efficient and powerful locomotives, capable of handling a wide variety of work. Along with 40 K-3 class and 50 K-3a class, also built at Richmond in 1924, C&O stabled a large and effective fleet of general purpose locomotives. Hey were used on mainline and branch lines in many different capacities from fast freight to locals and mine runs. Several were equipped with steam and signal lines for use as needed for extra
passenger work. They were standard power on the James River line east of Clifton Forge and on the Chicago Division Cincinnati-Chicago up to the end of steam.
One builder photo is included in this album, along with several showing left and right views taken in the 140s-
1950s, and a few typical action scenes.
