Hinton lies ina mountainous area of southern West Virginia at a point where the Greenbrier River flows into the New River. Only six families lived in the are when the railroad arrived, bought land, subdivided it, and laid out the town in 1871. The C&O donated the land for the present courthouse in 1873, and the following year Hinton became the county seat of Summers County.
