Dynamometer Road Tests H-8 #1608

Locomotive: No. 1608, which is the subject of this report, was designed by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company and built
by the Lima Locomotive W orks and represents the first of the Alleghany Type 2-6-6-6 wheel arrangement, the heaviest four-cylinder
six-coupled articulated locomotive built to date. This class of locomotive was developed for operation over the Alleghany Mountains, having curves of 6 degrees, and grades of 1.14 per cent terminating at an elevation of 2072 feet.
Dynamometer Car tests were conducted with Locomotive No. 1608 on the Alleghany Sub-Division from Clifton Forge, Va., and Hinton, WV Va., to Alleghany, Va. and on the Northern Sub-Division between Russell, Ky. and Columous, Ohio for the purpose of determining
its efficiency.
The detail data collected reflects the performance of the locomotive and my be used to compare with other similar locomotive road tests.”
