C&O M-1 Steam-Turbine-Electric Locomotives
C&O had Baldwin Locomotive Works and Westinghouse Electric build three huge steam-turbine-electric locomotives as its class M-1 Nos. 500-502. They were specifically constructed to power the ultra-luxury train The Chessie, that had been conceived by C&O Chairman Robert R. Young and were supposed to operate that train non-stop Washington to Cincinnati. The train was never operated and the locomotives were scrapped in 1950.
