Chessie System Freight Equipment Diagram Book 1977
This mechanical diagram book gives dimensioned drawings and basic mechanical data for all freight rolling stock operated by Chessie System Railroads as of about 1977. It combines the rosters of C&O, B&O and WM showing a large collection of diverse equipment. The mechanical diagrams began to be used as a standard reference in the early 1900s. By mid-century they were widely issue and used. Books such as this were supplied to any officers/employees needing them including: accountants, publicity people, sale offices, and, of course, mechanical and operational employees. They give a quick reference as to the size and capacity of the cars, useful to operations; of the appliances and types of mechanical devices used, information useful to mechanical employees; and they show ownership, dates of purchase, etc. which is useful to administrators and financial operations.
The 8-1/2×11-inch design used in this book began under the C&O/B&O operations in the late 1960s, and has carried through Chessie System to CSX.
