C&O 2027 Vintage Steam Calendar
This year’s Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society’s Steam Calendar features a selection of vintage steam locomotives from the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. While early photographs of these locomotives are rare, the C&OHS has curated some of the finest images from its collection for the 2027 Vintage Steam Calendar.
During the period from 1900 to 1920, the C&O evolved its Appalachian coal-hauling operations by replacing smaller 19th-century engines with large, modern steam locomotives for that era. The Consolidation (2-8-0) and Mikado (2-8-2) types were instrumental in managing heavy freight, while the Pacific (4-6-2) locomotives were renowned for their role in transporting passengers on the C&O’s premier trains.
