General Electric Model U-25B Diesel-Electrics 2500-2537 (Later 8100-8137) Photos
C&O purchased General Electric U-258 diesels in late 1963 as part of its first orders for “second generation” diesel locomotives. They were briefly used on the Alleghany Subdivision, but soon were transferred to the Northern Region (Michigan), until they received more widespread dispersion in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They were the first of the second generation diesels to be retired, in 1980. U-258’s came painted in the C&O’s standard of the early 1960s, with “Futura Oemibold” capital letters on their hoods, yellow noses and ends, with C&O for Progress logos. Later, a few were repainted without the yellow noses. Apparently none received Chessie System livery.
Photos in this album show them in both paint schemes, from official photos and general “railfan” type views.
