When the booklet was published in 1917, Nelson had just completed a survey of all C&O property and facilities. He became interested in the history of the Blue Ridge Railroad and its principal engineer, Claudius Crozet. Nelson prepared this short history of the famous Blue Ridge Tunnel as well as the other tunnels on the line crossing the Blue Ridge between Meechum’s River and Waynesboro. The booklet includes four interesting photographs of the portals for Greenwood and Blue Ridge tunnels. Each photo shows soldiers standing in front of the tunnels. Since they were taken in 1917, the tunnels were being guarded as vital infrastructure during WWI.
